The Science of Horror

Time: 01:00 PM – 02:00 PM Location: Williams Auditorium

Just in time for Halloween, join Clint Fluker, Ken Carter, and Zanthia Whiley for a deep dive into the thrills and chills of the horror genre. Why do we line up for haunted houses, scary movies, and ghost stories when they make our hearts race?
Horror also often mirrors our anxieties about disease, with stories of zombies and contagion reflecting real fears of outbreaks and epidemics. We'll  explore why infectious diseases spark such deep-seated dread, and how understanding these fears can help us separate fact from myth in the ways we protect our health.
This session unpacks the psychology of fear, the cultural history of horror, and the surprising ways our brains and bodies respond to being scared. Equal parts spooky and smart,The Science of Horror will leave you with new insight into why we love to be frightened—and what our fears reveal about us.
